Butterfly Valve Brief Introduction
A butterfly valve is a type of valve whose closing element (valve disc or butterfly plate) is a disc that rotates around a valve shaft to open and close. It primarily functions to cut off, throttle, or regulate the flow of media in pipelines. It can be used in water supply, gas, and oil industries for flow control and throttling, and also in high-temperature and high-pressure pipeline systems to control the media.
A butterfly valve mainly consists of a valve body, valve stem, butterfly plate, and sealing rings. The valve body is cylindrical with a relatively short axial length and contains a built-in butterfly plate.
Butterfly valves are generally classified by structure into centerline, single eccentric, double eccentric, and triple eccentric types. The opening and closing element of a butterfly valve is a disc-shaped butterfly plate that rotates 90° around its own axis within the valve body to open, close, or regulate the media. The butterfly plate is driven by the valve stem; rotating 90° completes one opening and closing cycle. Changing the deflection angle of the butterfly plate controls or regulates the flow rate of the media. The butterfly valve and butterfly stem themselves do not have self-locking capability; a worm gear reducer is installed on the valve stem to position the butterfly plate. The use of a manual worm gear reducer not only enables the butterfly plate to have self-locking capability, allowing it to stop at any position, but also improves the valve's operational performance.
Butterfly valves are suitable for various media, typically used in pipelines transporting various corrosive and non-corrosive fluids in engineering systems such as gas, hot and cold air, chemical smelting, power generation, environmental protection, and water supply and drainage. They are also used to regulate and cut off the flow of media.
Industrial-grade butterfly valves are high-temperature resistant and can withstand higher pressures. They have large nominal sizes, and the valve body is made of carbon steel. The sealing ring of the valve plate uses a metal ring instead of a rubber ring. Large high-temperature butterfly valves are manufactured by welding steel plates and are mainly used in projects such as flue gas ducts and gas pipelines for high-temperature media.
The main performance characteristics of butterfly valves are as follows:
(1) Short structural dimensions, small and lightweight, flexible and labor-saving operation, and good economy.
(2) Reliable sealing, achieving airtightness with no leakage.
(3) Flow characteristics tend to be linear, with optimal regulation performance.
(4) Can be used to design and manufacture large-diameter valves, up to approximately 4m in diameter. It is easy to process, has good manufacturability, and is convenient to install.
(5) Suitable for pipelines with different temperatures and pressure ratings below 4.0MPa, as well as corrosion-resistant applications.。
